Project Overview
This project in Accrington was more than just a patio and turf installation—it was a full-scale transformation of a garden that had become impractical and uninviting. The goal was to create a beautiful, functional outdoor space, blending robust drainage systems, stunning paving, and lush greenery.
Preparation and Groundwork
The original garden presented numerous challenges. The area had poor drainage, which often left the space waterlogged, making it difficult for the homeowners to enjoy or maintain. Additionally, the uneven and muddy ground meant the garden was unusable for most activities. Recognising these issues, we set out to not only improve the aesthetics but also address the underlying problems that had plagued the space for years.
This drainage system was designed with precision, pulling water away from every corner of the garden and redirecting it efficiently to the soakaway. This comprehensive setup ensures that the space remains dry and usable, regardless of the weather.
To enhance the functionality and aesthetic, we incorporated a recessed manhole cover and an acro channel to manage surface water effectively. These features not only serve a practical purpose but blend seamlessly into the garden’s design, maintaining a smooth and cohesive appearance.
Groundwork and Drainage Installation
The first and most critical phase was the groundwork. We began by clearing the entire area, removing the old uneven surface, overgrown vegetation, and any debris that hindered proper preparation. This allowed us to work on a clean slate.
To combat the persistent drainage problems, we installed a sophisticated system of perforated pipes, carefully laid to capture and channel excess water from all corners of the garden. These pipes were directed toward a central soakaway pit. The soakaway was constructed with layers of aggregate and lined with geotextile fabric to ensure long-term efficiency in filtering and dispersing water back into the ground naturally.
We also incorporated Acro channels and new drainage points around key areas, including near the house and patio edges, to prevent water pooling and protect the foundation of the property. This robust drainage network was the backbone of the project, ensuring the garden would remain dry and functional regardless of heavy rainfall.

Creating the Perfect Patio
Once the groundwork was complete, we turned our attention to the 120m² patio, which was to become the centerpiece of this garden. Indian Sandstone was chosen for its natural beauty, durability, and timeless appeal.
Each slab was meticulously selected and laid in a flowing pattern that complemented the overall space. The natural variations in color—from warm sandy hues to subtle greys—added depth and character to the patio. Careful attention was given to the joints to ensure a seamless and polished finish. The edges were neatly framed to define the space, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding lawn.
The patio was designed to accommodate outdoor furniture, providing the perfect setting for al fresco dining, entertaining guests, or simply enjoying the outdoors.
To balance the hardscape of the patio, we prepared the ground for 45m² of fresh turf. This required precise leveling to ensure a smooth and even finish. High-quality turf rolls were laid with care, instantly bringing the garden to life with a lush, green focal point.
The turf area was thoughtfully bordered by the patio, creating a seamless transition between the two elements. This not only enhanced the aesthetic flow of the space but also made it easy to maintain. The vibrant lawn provided a soft, inviting area for relaxation, play, or simply enjoying the tranquility of the garden.
The Finished Patio
The finished garden was a complete transformation from its original state. The combination of the expansive Indian Sandstone patio, lush turf, and advanced drainage system created a space that was not only beautiful but also highly functional. The homeowners now have an outdoor retreat that they can enjoy year-round, free from the drainage issues and maintenance challenges they previously faced.
