Project Overview

The team at Lakestone Paving recently completed a large driveway transformation in Bolton. Homeowners wanted a surface that was durable and sleek, while also complementing their stunning home. They originally opted for a resin-bound surface, but after more discussion and thought, they decided that they wanted tarmac instead of resin.

Excavation and Groundwork

Before we began the project, we marked out the driveway, making sure we followed the agreed layout and shape. The original driveway was excavated to the required depth so we could install the geotextile membrane to prevent weed growth and stabilise the ground. A high-quality MOT Type 1 hardcore sub-base was then laid in layers and compacted with a vibrating roller. This created a solid and level foundation that is capable of handling heavy vehicle traffic.

Drainage and Thresholds

Sufficient drainage is crucial, especially when it comes to large surfaces like this. We installed ACO-style linear drainage channels at the entrance, this was done to efficiently capture surface water and direct it away from the property. We also integrated recessed manhole covers and adjusted levels around the threshold to ensure a flush finish that didn’t interrupt the sleek flow of the drive.

Tarmac and Edging Installation

Once the sub-base was laid, we started installing the granite edging. Silver-grey granite setts were chosen due to the beautiful contrast with the dark tarmac. Every sett was hand-laid and then set in concrete, this ensured a strong, permanent bond. We ensured precision when working on the curves and straight edges, to help define and shape the driveway. Then we turned our focus on the tarmac installation. First we applied a binding layer of tarmac, followed by a durable top coat of stone mastic asphalt. The tarmac was then laid hot and smoothed out by hand around the edges and features. A roller was then used to achieve smooth compaction.

Finishing Touches

While the tarmac was cooling, final checks were made on all the joints, edges and drainage systems. any excess materials and debris were removed, and the site was swept and hosed down to leave a pristine finish.

The Final Result

The finished driveway significantly boosted the kerb appeal of the property. The striking contrast of the dark tarmac and the bright granite edging gives the property a modern and polished look. It doesn’t only look fantastic but is also built to withstand the test of time.
