Lakestone Paving has been providing targeted landscaping and block paving solutions to a growing number of customers throughout Lancashire and the surrounding areas. While we have become respected for unique specialities such as decking, drainage, fencing, and resin-bound driveways, there are many times when customers desire a more traditional touch. One recent block paving project in Burnley illustrates our attention to detail as well as why the team at Lake Stone has become synonymous with quality solutions at competitive prices. Let’s take a closer look.
Initial Steps
We were tasked with transforming an ordinary asphalt driveway into a veritable work of art through the use of hand-laid paving stones. These paving stones are durable, easy to maintain and available in numerous colours. For this project, we chose a combination of white and grey stones. After the initial consultation, our team carried out an extensive survey of the property in order to clearly appreciate the subsequent steps which needed to be taken.
We then made certain that the ground surface was level. This is important when addressing potential drainage concerns in the future. One interesting feature of this project was the existence of an underground junction box. It was crucial that access to this box was not compromised when laying the subsequent brickwork. Our team noted its location so that bricks could be properly cut around the cover.
Laying the Bricks and Installing the Fence
Once the initial preparation was completed, our professionals then began the installation process itself. We chose to employ a herringbone pattern when laying the bricks, as this provided the garden with a unique sense of beauty and depth. Due in part to the desires of the customer, we also utilised alternating white and grey stones around the periphery. This provided a slight Roman flavour while helping to clearly outline the garden patio itself. Such borders likewise complimented the existing fence foundations.
As with all of our projects, we paid attention to the smallest of details in order to guarantee that the layered bricks fit perfectly together with one another (similar to a real-life jigsaw puzzle). This was convenient due to the fact that such tight fittings ensured that no mortar was needed. This design is also beneficial from a maintenance point of view, as water can percolate through the surface and unlike traditional paving methods, cracks within the joints will not occur.
Finally, we carefully cut the bricks around the inner herringbone perimeter so that they locked seamlessly in place with the white border. The end result was a garden that had been completely transformed while simultaneously offering a stunning aesthetic appeal.
